Cost per day
Budget $95/day (hostel dorm, Bónus groceries, walking). Midrange $250 (three-star near Laugavegur, sit-down meals, one tour). Luxury $550+ (boutique hotel, tasting menus, private Golden Circle). Reykjavik is likely the most expensive capital in the Nordics. The cheapest proper meal in the center is a 650 ISK ($5.40) lamb hot dog from Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur. Tap water is excellent and free, so skip bottled.

What to avoid
Skip the overpriced tourist restaurants along Laugavegur, the Blue Lagoon when neighborhood pools cost a fraction, and Northern Lights guaranteed tour ads. Reykjavik scores 9.3/10 for solo-traveler safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index), but the wind chill and restaurant markups will catch you faster than any scam.

Food culture
Reykjavik's food culture is built on lamb, North Atlantic fish, and preserved traditions like hákarl (fermented shark) and harðfiskur (dried haddock). Prices run high, with a restaurant main averaging 4,000 to 7,000 ISK ($33 to $58). The best meals happen at lunch, when set menus drop 30% to 40%. Two food halls, Hlemmur Mathöll and Grandi Mathöll, offer the widest range at lower cost.

Best hostels
Reykjavik's hostel inventory clusters in three patches of the city, each trading something different for a bed. Austurbær holds the old downtown core where Laugavegur runs its full commercial length and the harbor sits a few blocks north; hostels here cost more because the walk to Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, and the whale-watching pier is short. Hlíðar wraps around the BSÍ bus terminal south of the Tjörnin pond, where most backpackers land first when their airport bus pulls in; prices drop because the streets are quieter and restaurants thin out past Hringbraut. Teigar stretches east past the university into lower-density residential blocks, where hostel beds stay cheap and the domestic airport's runway sits closer than the nearest tourist shop. The three neighborhoods form a compact arc along Reykjavik's southwest coast, so the choice comes down to what you want outside the door each morning: the commercial spine, the transit hub, or the residential calm.

Best free attractions
Free Reykjavík is not a consolation prize for travellers watching the króna: it is the honest core of the city. The capital's public squares and parks were laid out on the assumption that weather would drive people indoors often enough that outdoor space had to earn its keep the rest of the year, and it does. What follows is six addresses where you pay nothing and still leave with something. Two are public squares and parks in central Reykjavík itself, one is the city's botanical garden on the eastern side, one is a park a short walk south of the centre, one is a wooded hill in the centre of the city, and the last sits in Hafnarfjörður, the harbour town at the southern edge of the capital region. They are for the visitor who would rather read the city in daylight than in a queue. Bring a jacket. Bring time. Read them in the order below.
