How do I get to Antwerp?

Brussels Airport (BRU) in Zaventem, 45 km south of Antwerp, handles nearly every international arrival. Brussels Airlines and United run nonstop service from JFK and Newark at $650-1,100 round-trip in economy. From London Heathrow, BA and Brussels Airlines fly the 1-hour hop for £80-180. Antwerp does have its own airport (ANR), 5 km southeast of the Groenplaats, but it handles limited scheduled service. TUI fly currently operates seasonal holiday routes, and a handful of regional connections come and go. For most travelers, ANR is not a realistic option. Budget carriers like Ryanair and Wizz Air land at Brussels South Charleroi (CRL), 115 km south, but reaching Antwerp from there takes roughly 2.5 hours by shuttle bus and two trains. That rarely justifies the fare savings unless you find a sub-€30 ticket.

The single best thing about reaching Antwerp is the train from Brussels Airport. The station sits directly below the terminal. Walk off your flight, follow the blue "Train" signs in the arrivals hall, and you're on a platform within 10 minutes. SNCB runs direct IC trains to Antwerp-Centraal roughly every 30 minutes. The ride takes 35 minutes, and a standard ticket costs about €16, Diabolo airport supplement included. You step off into Antwerp-Centraal's marble-clad hall, where your footsteps bounce off stone that dates to the 1905 renovation. The light drops through the iron-and-glass train shed three stories above. From here, the Grote Markt and most hotels in the historic center are a flat 10-minute walk west.

Rail might be the better choice altogether if you're already in Western Europe. Eurostar connects Paris Gare du Nord to Antwerp-Centraal in 1 hour 48 minutes, with tickets from €35 when booked 3 months ahead. From Amsterdam Centraal, the same high-speed service takes 1 hour 10 minutes at €19-45. From London St Pancras, the Eurostar to Brussels-Midi runs 2 hours. Then a domestic IC to Antwerp adds 45 minutes, putting total travel at about 3.5 hours for £90-200. Mind you, that's comparable to flying once you factor in Heathrow check-in time and the BRU transfer. The Eurostar drops you at Antwerp-Centraal, not 45 km away. The station's ground-floor hall carries the warm, yeasty smell of fresh waffles from the Panos counter near the exit. You're 200 meters from the Meir shopping street and your first proper Belgian beer.

The E19 from Amsterdam (160 km, about 2 hours) and the E313 from Aachen, Germany (140 km, 1.5 hours) both feed into Antwerp's ring road. Parking downtown runs €15-25 per day at garages under the Groenplaats or near the Sportpaleis. Worth noting, Antwerp's low-emission zone covers everything inside the ring. Vehicles that don't meet current emission standards need a registration at lez-antwerpen.be or face a €150 fine. Check before you drive. Flights to BRU tend to be cheapest from January through March, when US East Coast round-trips drop to $550-700. The December holiday window and July through August see fares reach $1,100-1,400. From the UK, May and September offer the best balance of price and weather. That said, Antwerp stays cool and grey well into June.
