How do I get around Lynchburg?

Rent a car. That is the honest answer for Lynchburg, a city built on seven hills where the altitude change between Rivermont Avenue and downtown can hit 90 meters in under a kilometer. Greater Lynchburg Transit Company runs 14 fixed routes from its main hub at Kemper Street Station, with a base fare of $1.50 per ride. Buses run Monday through Saturday, with most routes starting around 6:15 a.m. and finishing by 6:30 p.m. There is no Sunday service at all. If your hotel is on Wards Road near the Liberty University corridor, Route 2 connects you to the downtown transfer point in about 25 minutes. But the frequency is roughly 60 minutes per route, and missing a bus means waiting in Virginia summer humidity that currently sits near 78%. The GLTC website posts real-time tracking, though the interface feels like it was last updated around 2014.

Uber and Lyft both operate in Lynchburg, but driver supply is noticeably thinner than in Richmond or Charlottesville. A ride from the Amtrak station on Kemper Street to the Bluffwalk area downtown might run $8 to $12, and wait times of 10 to 15 minutes are normal outside the Liberty University class-change surge. After 10 p.m. on weeknights, you might wait 20 minutes or find no drivers at all.
