Is Playa del Carmen safe?

Playa del Carmen sits calmer than the fringes of Cancún and edgier than Mérida. The violence that makes headlines is cartel business over drug sales, and it has reached tourist venues before: gunmen killed five people at the Blue Parrot club during the BPM Festival in January 2017, and a manager was shot dead at Mamita's Beach Club in January 2022. Tourists are rarely the target, but a solo traveller at a bar on Calle 12 at 3am stands closer to that trade than one eating tacos on Avenida 30. Men on Quinta Avenida will murmur offers of weed and cocaine every block or two between Calle 4 and Calle 28. A flat 'no, gracias' without slowing down tends to end it. Our read is that buying is the riskiest thing a visitor can do in Playa, because police in Quintana Roo are reported to work the same corners for bribes.

After dark, the comfortable grid runs from the beach inland to Avenida 30, and from Avenida Juárez north to Avenida CTM. Quinta Avenida stays lit and crowded past midnight, with reggaeton bass thudding out of Calle 12 and the smell of charred al pastor drifting from the trompos near Avenida 10. Women walking alone tell us the catcalls thicken around Calle 12 after 1am, while the stretch near Calle 38 is quieter, with more people eating than drinking. We'd skip Colonia Colosio north of Avenida CTM at night, along with the blocks west of Highway 307, where streetlights thin out and there is little reason for a visitor to be. The beach itself is dark and empty after sunset, even at Mamitas, so walk back along Quinta Avenida rather than the sand. Playacar, south of the Cozumel ferry pier, is gated and patrolled, and feels safe at any hour but leaves you a 20-minute walk from company.

Taxis in Playa carry no meters, and that is where most solo visitors lose money. Agree the fare in pesos before the door closes, and expect a hop inside Centro to cost roughly 80 to 150 pesos; at the current rate of 18.3419 pesos to the US dollar, a 500-peso overcharge is about 27 dollars gone. Colectivo vans to Tulum and Cancún leave from Calle 2 near Avenida 20, with the air-conditioning set cold enough to raise goosebumps on damp skin, and they are safe by day, though we take the ADO bus from the terminal at Quinta Avenida and Avenida Juárez once it gets dark. Withdraw cash from machines inside bank branches on Avenida Juárez or Avenida 30; the standalone ATMs along Quinta Avenida are the ones most often reported for skimming. At 6am on 13 October the air was already 26.4°C at 92% humidity and felt like 31.3°C, so carry water before a long walk north to Calle 38.

Eating alone is easy in Playa. Taco counters such as El Fogón on Avenida 30 seat one person without a second glance, and the salsa verde there stings the lips, while beachfront restaurants on Quinta Avenida are more likely to steer a single diner to a bad table. Drink spiking is reported in the Calle 12 clubs, so order bottled beer, watch it opened, and leave with the people you arrived with. A small-group van tour to Xcaret, about 6 km south on Highway 307, or to the cenotes toward Tulum is the fastest way we know to find dinner company for the same evening. Ask about a single supplement before paying, since some operators in Quintana Roo price per pair. Hostels in Centro between Calle 4 and Calle 12 sell private rooms, which often undercut a hotel double billed to one guest. October falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November, so buy insurance that covers evacuation and storm cancellation.
