How do I get from the airport to Playa del Carmen?

Playa del Carmen has no airport. Cancún International (CUN) sits about 55 km north along the coast, and every flight in funnels through one of its two main terminals. The ADO bus is the right answer for most visitors. Departures run from both Terminal 2 and Terminal 4, roughly every 30 minutes between 8am and midnight. The ride to Playa's downtown bus station on Avenida Juárez takes about 70 minutes, and you'll pay around 340 MXN ($20) at the ticket counter inside the terminal. Buy your ticket at the ADO booth, not from anyone approaching you in the arrivals hall. The bus itself is air-conditioned to the point of being cold, so keep a layer handy. You'll roll past low scrub jungle and the occasional cenote sign for most of the drive before the highway narrows into town.

Pre-booked private transfers are the better option if you're traveling with family or arriving after midnight when ADO service thins out. Shuttle companies running from CUN to Playa del Carmen charge 800-1,200 MXN ($47-71) per vehicle, not per person. You book online, and the driver meets you at arrivals with a printed sign. Worth noting, that price covers up to 4 passengers, which makes it competitive with four individual bus tickets. Official airport taxis are a different story, running 1,800-2,500 MXN ($106-148) for the same route. The taxi counter inside the terminal is the only safe place to arrange one. Never negotiate with freelance drivers curbside.

Colectivos, the shared minivans that locals use, are the cheapest ground option at around 60-80 MXN ($3.50-4.75). But here's the catch. They don't pick up at the airport. You'd need to reach the Highway 307 turnoff near Puerto Morelos first, about 15 minutes from Terminal 2. For a first-time visitor dragging a suitcase through 30°C heat and 90%+ humidity, this is miserable advice. Skip it. If you rent a car, the drive south is about 45 minutes in light traffic. Parking in centro is tight and pricey, though. Most lots charge 30-50 MXN per hour. The town is walkable once you're in, so a rental makes more sense if you're staying south toward Playacar or plan to visit Tulum and the cenotes on your own schedule.

The bus station sits two blocks from Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) and the waterfront. You'll step off into warm, salt-thick air. At night the surrounding streets smell like grilled corn from the elote carts on every corner. Most Centro hotels are a 5-10 minute walk. If you're staying in Playacar, the gated resort zone about 2 km south, a taxi from the station runs 50-80 MXN. Mind you, the taxis in town look different from the airport fleet. White vans with route numbers are colectivos. Small white sedans with red plates are regular taxis. Neither uses meters in Playa del Carmen, so confirm the fare before you get in. Typical in-town rides cost 40-80 MXN.
