Can I leave the airport on a layover in Crete?

Heraklion's Nikos Kazantzakis Airport sits on the coast east of the old Venetian walls. Bus line 1 runs to Eleftherias Square every 10-15 minutes from about 06:15 to 23:00, takes 20-25 minutes, and costs 1.20 EUR. A taxi covers the same ground in 15 minutes for 10-15 EUR, metered. If you're arriving from outside the Schengen zone, budget 20-30 minutes for passport control during summer, when charter flights from northern Europe land between 10:00 and 14:00. From another Schengen country, you walk straight through. On a 5-hour window, the math leaves about 2.5 hours in the city after transit both ways and a 90-minute return buffer. Pack water. Late August brings temperatures around 28-30°C under dry Mediterranean sun, with relative humidity typically between 40% and 55%. The meltemi wind blows from the north most summer afternoons, which helps on the harbor walk but can kick up dust near inland sites like Knossos.

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum on Xanthoudidou Street, reopened in 2014 after a long reconstruction, holds the largest Minoan collection anywhere. Founded in 1883, it takes about 90 minutes to walk at a comfortable pace. The Hall of Frescoes on the upper floor has the original bull-leaping fresco from Knossos, its pigments still warm ochre and faded blue after 3,500 years. The Phaistos Disc sits in a ground-floor case where low light picks out each of its 242 stamped symbols in the clay. If your window stretches to 7 or 8 hours, Knossos itself is about 25 minutes south by taxi from the airport. The site has been occupied since roughly 7000 BC, and the reconstructed Minoan palace takes 60-90 minutes without a guide. Solo visitors tend to clear both locations in about 3.5 hours, compared to the 5-6 that organized groups typically need.

For a meal that won't penalize you for being a party of one, walk from the museum south down 25 Avgoustou Street toward the Venetian harbor. The 10-minute walk drops you at the waterfront near Koules Fortress, the 16th-century sea fort at the harbor wall's tip, where the breeze carries salt and diesel from the fishing boats moored below. Peskesi, on Kapetan Charalampi Street a couple of blocks inland, serves Cretan dishes built from pre-industrial island recipes. Their lamb with stamnagathi, a bitter wild green from Crete's White Mountains, runs about 14-16 EUR, roughly $16-19 at the current exchange rate. Heraklion's central grid between Lions Square and the harbor stays well-lit and populated past midnight through summer. I'd walk the harbor wall at 23:00 without hesitation.

If your layover is tight and city traffic sounds like a gamble, Cretaquarium in Gournes sits 10 minutes east of the airport by taxi for about 8-10 EUR. Opened in 2005, the facility runs cool and blue-lit against the coastal heat, with loggerhead turtle tanks and a shark tunnel that fill 60-90 minutes. Mind you, Crete has two commercial airports. If your connection routes through Chania in the west, the old Venetian harbor there is 14 kilometers from CHQ, about 25 minutes by taxi for 20-25 EUR. Chania's covered Agora market, built in 1913 on a cruciform plan, is a 5-minute walk from the waterfront and still operates as a food market with Cretan cheese and honey vendors. That said, neither airport has reliable night bus service after 23:00, so a late-evening layover likely means taxi both ways or staying airside.
