How do I get to Sedona?

Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is the airport you want. Delta, American, United, Southwest, and Frontier all operate out of PHX, with nonstop service from LAX, SFO, JFK, ORD, DFW, SEA, and about 100 other domestic cities. Round-trip fares from the East Coast run $250-450. West Coast flights tend to land around $150-300. From London, British Airways flies nonstop to PHX at £600-900 round-trip, though a connection via LAX or Dallas on American can drop that to £500-750. PHX has three terminals linked by the PHX Sky Train, and the rental car center is a 5-minute shuttle ride from baggage claim.

The 2-hour drive from PHX to Sedona on I-17 North is straightforward until you hit the final stretch. You'll climb from the Sonoran Desert floor at 340 meters to red rock country at 1,370 meters, and the temperature can drop 10°C between the two. The last 30 minutes on AZ-179 through the Village of Oak Creek is where the landscape shifts. Red sandstone buttes rise above the juniper scrub, and the dry pine smell fills the car if you crack a window. Mind you, if you arrive on a Friday afternoon between March and May, that final stretch on AZ-179 can back up for 45 minutes at the roundabouts. A Saturday morning departure from PHX avoids the worst of it.

Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) is the closer option to the north, with American Eagle regional jets from PHX and DFW. The flights are short, 45 minutes from Phoenix, but they often run $200-350 one-way on a small CRJ-200, and connections are limited to 3-4 departures per day. The math rarely works unless you're already routing through Dallas. That said, the drive from FLG to Sedona through Oak Creek Canyon on AZ-89A takes about 40 minutes and might be the best leg of the whole trip. The road switchbacks down through basalt and sandstone where the air shifts from cool ponderosa pine at 2,100 meters to warm juniper at Sedona's elevation. Sedona Airport (SEZ) sits on a mesa above town with a reputation for crosswinds, but it handles only private and charter aircraft.

Shuttle services fill the gap if you'd rather not drive. Groome Transportation operates 6-8 daily departures from PHX Terminal 4 for about $55-65 one-way. The trip takes 2.5 hours with a stop in Camp Verde. Once you're in town, the problem becomes clear. Ride-share coverage is thin, and the trailheads and overlooks are spread across 25 km of highway corridor. Without your own wheels, you're looking at hotel shuttles or $40 taxi rides to reach places like Slide Rock State Park, 11 km north. A rental from PHX runs $40-70 per day for a compact, and parking at most trailheads costs $5 with a Red Rock Pass. The annual pass is $20, available at the Sedona Chamber of Commerce on AZ-89A or any Circle K in town.
