How the planner works
Drop a pin on the map, on your hotel, a park gate, or wherever you will be standing in your running shoes, and pick 5K or 10K. Our routing engine explores the OpenStreetMap footpaths, park paths, promenades and quiet streets around that point and returns up to three distinct loops within ten percent of your distance, each starting and finishing at the pin. A preference for paths or paved streets steers the search; avoiding steps drops staircases from the graph.
Every loop is measured, not described. The connecting streets figure is how much of the loop runs on ordinary streets before and after its longest car-free stretch; the crossings list names each major road the loop crosses, placed on the map; the footway share is the fraction mapped as pedestrian paths. The numbers come from the same map data the loop was drawn on, so a loop that looks green on the map is green in the figures too. Where a measurement could not be made, the planner says so rather than printing a zero.
The first search in a new area takes a minute or two while the engine downloads and prepares the local map; searches after that answer in seconds. Loops are computer-generated and unverified: check access, crossings, closures and current conditions before you run. Download the GPX file to follow the loop on a watch or phone. The map tiles load from OpenStreetMap in your browser under its usage policy; nothing about your start point is stored.
