How do I get around Puerto Vallarta?

The green-and-white city buses run along Avenida Francisco Medina Ascencio from Marina Vallarta through the Hotel Zone, Centro, and south to Mismaloya. Fare is 10-12 pesos, roughly 0.60-0.70 USD at the current rate of 16.91 MXN per dollar. Routes are painted on the windshield, not posted at stops, so look for "Centro" or "Mismaloya" in block letters before flagging one down. Buses run from about 5:30 AM to 11 PM with gaps of 15-20 minutes on the main corridor. After 11 PM, Uber is your only realistic option. A ride from the Hotel Zone to Zona Romántica costs 40-60 pesos on Uber, versus 100-150 pesos in a yellow taxi. Download Uber before you land. Grab, Bolt, and DiDi do not operate in the Banderas Bay area.

Zona Romántica and the Malecón are flat enough to walk, and that's how you should cover them. The Malecón stretches about 1.6 km along the waterfront from Hotel Rosita south to the Los Muertos pier. On weekend evenings, mariachi bands play near the Aquiles Serdán amphitheater and the smell of roasted elote drifts from carts along the seawall. Sidewalks in both neighborhoods are uneven cobblestone, so closed-toe shoes with grip beat flip-flops. Mind you, anything east of the Río Cuale climbs steeply into Gringo Gulch, and streets above Calle Zaragoza involve stone staircases. North of the river, the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood has narrower sidewalks pressed against delivery traffic. The Hotel Zone stretches about 4 km north of Centro along a six-lane highway with almost no pedestrian crossings between the resorts.

Water taxis leave from the Los Muertos pier, the curved concrete pier at the south end of the Malecón. Yelapa is 45 minutes south, 250-350 pesos round trip. Las Ánimas and Quimixto run 20-30 minutes and 200-300 pesos. Boats depart around 10:30-11 AM and return by 4-5 PM. Miss the last one and you'll hire a private panga for 1,500+ pesos. The ride gets rough when Pacific swells build in September and October, and the salt spray soaks everything below the gunwale. Keep your phone in a dry bag. For highway destinations like Sayulita (42 km north) or the Vallarta Botanical Gardens (30 minutes south on Highway 200), colectivo buses leave every 20-30 minutes from the central terminal on Calle Lázaro Cárdenas for about 50 pesos.

At Gustavo Díaz Ordaz airport (PVR), the authorized taxi booth marked "Transporte Terrestre" sells fixed-rate tickets by zone inside the terminal. Zone 3 covers Zona Romántica at about 400 pesos. Uber pickup works from the departures level, not arrivals. That's a 5-minute walk upstairs, but it saves roughly 40% on the fare. To be fair, Puerto Vallarta's taxi drivers are not running the meter-scam routine you might encounter in Mexico City. They work from posted zone charts at each sitio (taxi stand), and you can photograph the rate card before getting in. That said, for a first-time visitor who doesn't speak much Spanish, Uber removes the fare negotiation entirely. Uber from PVR to Zona Romántica runs about 250-280 pesos.
